The petitions filed by three appellants including former MP, Duminda Silva were dismissed by the Supreme Court today. However, the Supreme Court ordered to acquit the fourth petitioner, a police officer, Anura Thushara de Mel. Four appellants including former MP Duminda Silva filed these petitions citing that they were denied a fair trial by the High Court, a right that every citizen is entitled to. Several senior president counsels and a deputy solicitor general made submissions during the trial of these appeals which were heard for nearly 5 months. The High Court judgment was re-considered by a panel of five Supreme Court judges led by the Chief Justice Priyasath Depp. Delivering the verdict, the 5 judge panel ordered to acquit only a police officer, Anura Thushara de Mel. The Supreme Court verdict cited that appellants, former MP Duminda Silva, Chaminda Ravi Jayanath and Sarath Bandara were cleared only from the indictment against them to have using illegal firearms. However, the Supreme Court reassured the ruling given against these three appellants by the High Court and dismissed their petitions today.
