No-Confidence Motion against President ready
The UNP has already backed the resolution and is reportedly working to get signatures from other opposition parties. If the NCM adds 113 signatures, there is no legitimacy to oust the president, but it is clear that confidence in the president in parliament has eroded and that Gotabhaya Rajapakse continues to press for his resignation.
Senior sources say that if the president resigns, parliament will appoint a new president - a candidate they believe is best suited for the post. It is reported that even the JVP is likely to sign the NCM against the President and the Sri Lanka People's Front MPs are also approaching it.
Senior sources said the 11 party alliance members including Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila will be approached to sign the NCM, as Wimal Weerawansa was one of the first to publicly say he will not accept any portfolio under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. It is reported that the NCM started by the opposition SJB against the Prime Minister has not been able to get the required number of votes and although MPs like Gammanpila have voiced support for it with the ruling party MPs, the signatures have not been kept on paper yet.
